Physical Trainings
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)

- Introduction to Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)

This one day course is aimed at trainee and assistant cardiologists with little or no experience in coronary diagnostics. The focus is on learning how to handle instruments or systems that are essential for a later intervention (such as catheters, devices, X-ray systems).

In addition to operating the X-ray system, training deals with the selection and handling of the guide catheter and a suitable wire. Further content covers the selection of a balloon or stent catheter and addresses questions about the contrast medium. The operation of injection systems, including contrast medium syringes, is also on the agenda of this course.

Necessary skills are taught on both a virtual reality simulator and models. These range from the selection of catheter materials to the correct handling of the catheters and techniques for avoiding complications.

- Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Advanced

This one day session is intended for physicians who already have experience in coronary intervention, as well as for those who want to refresh their knowledge. The focus is on both diagnostic procedures (selection of projection planes, intubation of the guiding catheter and assessment of lesions) and therapy (planning the procedure, sequence of navigation, assessment, pre- and post-dilatation, balloon or stent selection). In addition, the steps and procedures of complication management will be practiced.

- Emergency Management around Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)

This one day course is aimed at the entire cath lab team (interventional cardiologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, assistants).

The goal is to practice and discuss emergency management strategies and procedures. Strengths and weaknesses in a department's system and its interfaces will be analyzed, before developing solutions for critical situations.

Participants will become familiar with Crisis Resource Management (CRM) principles and learn how to apply them. The focus of the training will be on teamwork and communication.

Right Heart Catheterization (RHC)

This one day course is designed for prospective general practitioners and cardiology residents, as well as a refresher for interventional cardiologists.

Participants will gain an insight into typical interventional cardiology procedures. This includes implementing immediate emergency measures. Practical simulation exercises on models, as well as learning about the different catheter types and their respective areas of application, will provide the necessary confidence to approach and treat patients.

Basics of Cardiology

Training Concept

This training course is intended for residents in further training to acquire the basics of interventional cardiology in theory and practice.

The content of this course is fully conveyed and practiced virtually with the help of the interactive virtual CATHI Online tool - partly in lectures and partly in self-study and online self-training. This tool allows online training 24/7 and requires internet access only.

This enables the trainee to perform the training self-paced and tailored to his individual schedule – apart from the classroom lectures.

It is divided into four modules that build on each other and can also be booked independently from each other.

The course concludes with an exam and a training certificate, which proves that the participant has acquired the relevant interventional skills.

It embraces the teaching of coronary anatomy (LAO, RAO, cranial position) in the various levels:

  • basics of coronary anatomy and pathology

  • recognition of radiation hygiene in connection with vascular anatomy from different perspectives

  • learning of the first steps in performing and assessing diagnostic coronary angiography

  • structured learning of the handling of interventional instruments in first cardiological procedures and

  • basic principles of coronary interventions.
